Live Light - THE HARVEST SERIES · WEEK 3

Trusting the Seasons of Growth

Have you ever looked at a commitment on your calendar and thought:

Why am I still doing this?

Maybe it’s a service you offer because you’re good at it. A professional role you worked hard to earn. A goal that once excited you but now feels like another obligation.

You keep showing up because you said you would, people count on you, and you’ve already invested so much.

But underneath all that responsibility, there’s a quieter question:

Does this still belong in the life I’m building?

In the first two weeks of this series, we explored giving growth time and becoming intentional about what we water.

This week, we’re considering something equally important: knowing when to stop feeding what no longer fits.

Being capable doesn’t make it your calling forever

For busy professionals and business owners, competence can become a trap.

You become the person who handles the difficult client, solves the problem, volunteers for the committee, or keeps everything moving.

People trust you. Opportunities follow.

And sometimes, without realizing it, you build a calendar around what other people know you can do rather than what you want to keep doing.

I understand this personally. After more than 20 years in the beauty industry, including owning a salon, I had developed skills and relationships I deeply valued. Exploring a different direction meant allowing myself to be a beginner again.

That chapter still matters. The communication, leadership, and human connection I practiced continue to shape my coaching today.

You can appreciate what a chapter gave you and still recognize that it’s time to turn the page.

Is it time to release it, or does it need support?

Of course, feeling uncomfortable doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong for you.

Meaningful work can be challenging. A new boundary can feel awkward. A worthwhile goal can require patience long before it delivers results.

Before making a change, pause and ask:

  • Does this still matter to me, even when it’s difficult?

  • Would better boundaries, support, or a different approach make it sustainable?

  • If I were choosing today, would I say yes again?

You might discover that you still love your work, but need to stop being available every evening.

You might want to keep serving a client group, but change how you deliver that service.

Or you might realize that a goal belongs to an earlier version of you.

Discernment gives you room to examine the commitment before deciding what comes next.

Your past investment deserves perspective

One of the hardest thoughts to move through is:

But I’ve already put so much into this.

Time. Money. Training. Energy. Identity.

Those investments matter. They helped you learn what you know now.

But they don’t have to make every future decision for you.

Ask yourself:

Knowing what I know today, what deserves my next hour of energy?

That question brings you back to a choice you can actually make.

But they don’t have to make every future decision for you.

Ask yourself:

Knowing what I know today, what deserves my next hour of energy?

That question brings you back to a choice you can actually make.

Make one intentional adjustment

You don’t need to overhaul your life this week.

Choose one commitment to examine. Have the conversation you’ve been postponing. Renegotiate a responsibility. Pause a project. Give an interest you’ve been dismissing 20 minutes of your attention.

If you decide to step away, consider the people affected and make a thoughtful transition.

Growth includes learning what to nurture, what to reshape, and what to release.

What are you continuing to water because it matters to you...and what are you watering simply because you always have?
