Let Freedom Ring

"Freedom is not just the absence of chains. It's the courage to stop carrying the ones you've been holding onto."

As we prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July, our country marks an extraordinary milestone — 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. For generations, Independence Day has represented courage, hope, sacrifice, and the belief that people are meant to live free.

But this week, I want to invite you to consider a different kind of freedom.

What if the greatest independence isn't just political?

What if it's emotional?

Many of us are walking through life carrying invisible chains. Old stories. Limiting beliefs. Shame. Fear. Resentment. Self-doubt. The voice that whispers, "I'm not enough." The belief that says, "This is just who I am."

The truth is, our brains are incredibly efficient. They take experiences from our past and turn them into automatic stories designed to keep us safe. Unfortunately, those same stories often keep us stuck.

What would it look like if you gave yourself permission to question the truth of these stories?

And what would open up for you if you allowed yourself to let them go and intentionally rewrite the narrative to align with your current values? One of the reasons I became a mindset coach is because I struggled with my internal narrative. Sometimes my brain would be my ally and other times, it would be my worst enemy. The energy drain was exhausting and it was preventing me from feeling secure and comfortable in my own skin. It was robbing me from accessing my peace and my joy.

The anxiety would show up when I was “waiting for the other shoe to drop” because things were going so weak, or I was on a shame spiral when I made a mistake. On the outside, I would hide it, but on the inside, it was eating me up. Then, the story would spill into other areas, and my brain was actively looking for evidence for it to be true.

My friends, I’m here to share with you:

You are not your worst moment.

You are not your anxiety.

You are not your mistakes.

You are not the labels you've accepted as truth.

Freedom begins the moment you notice that your thoughts are influencing your emotions, and understanding they don't have to control your next choice.

One of my favorite reminders is this:

You can't always choose your first emotion, but you can choose what you do next.

That's where one of my favorite tools comes in: Tap Before You Snap.

When you notice yourself becoming overwhelmed, reactive, craving a drink or comfort food, or spiraling into an old story, don't force yourself to "think positive." Instead, regulate your nervous system first.

Pause.

Take a slow breath.

Gently tap on your body:

your collarbone, the side of your hand, or another tapping point that feels natural, and simply acknowledge what's true.

"I'm feeling overwhelmed right now."

"A part of me believes this old story."

"My nervous system feels activated."

Then remind yourself:

"I am safe in this moment."

"I don't have to react automatically."

"I get to choose my next step."

That small pause changes everything.

Because real freedom isn't the absence of difficult emotions. It's knowing that your emotions no longer have to make your decisions for you.

As you celebrate this Independence Day, I hope you'll also celebrate the quiet victories that no one else sees:

The moment you pause instead of react.

The conversation you have instead of avoiding it.

The drink you choose not to pour to numb out or escape.

The boundary you finally honor.

The story you decide to release.

Those are acts of freedom, too.

Reflection

As we celebrate 250 years of independence, ask yourself:

Where in my life am I ready to declare my own independence from an old story, a limiting belief, or a pattern that no longer serves the person I am becoming?

Here's to freedom—not just around us, but within us.

With gratitude,

Nikki
