Live Light: Creating Clarity When You Feel Stuck

Have you ever had one of those days when everything just feels like…too much?

The laundry is piling up. Your desk is covered. You have 17 tabs open on your computer and just as many open in your brain. There’s a conversation you keep replaying, a decision you need to make, and a list of things you should be doing.

And suddenly, you feel completely stuck.

Here’s something we often miss:

Physical clutter, mental clutter, and emotional clutter are connected.

When one starts piling up, the others often aren’t far behind.

When Everything Feels Heavy

Think about walking into a cluttered room.

Even if you aren’t consciously thinking about every object, your brain is still taking it in: the laundry on the chair, the stack of papers, the junk drawer that barely closes, the notifications flashing on your screen.

Now add the mental clutter: decisions, responsibilities, unfinished tasks, worries, and the constant I need to remember to…

Then there’s emotional clutter: frustration you haven’t processed, resentment you’re carrying, sadness you’ve pushed aside, or anxiety about something you can’t control.

No wonder we crave relief.

When we're overloaded, our brains naturally look for a fast way to feel better.

A glass of wine after work. Scrolling on the couch. Comfort food. Online shopping. Whatever gives us that quick hit of pleasure or escape.

And sometimes those things are simply enjoyable.

The important question is:

Am I choosing this because I want it—or because I need to escape how I feel?

Self-Care or Self-Numbing?

Before reaching for the quickest relief, try inserting a pause and ask:

What do I actually need right now?

Maybe you don't need wine. Maybe you need to eat because you skipped lunch.

Maybe you don't need another hour scrolling. Maybe your nervous system needs a walk outside.

Maybe you don't need to push through one more task. Maybe you need to cry, journal, pray, breathe, or acknowledge that something hurt.

And sometimes?

You need to clean the damn junk drawer.

Self-numbing says, Help me not feel this right now.

Self-care says, Let me listen to what I need and respond to it.

Start

Small

When life feels overwhelming, we often make the mistake of trying to fix everything at once.

Don't clean the whole house.

Pick one small space.

Your spice drawer. Your wallet. Your bathroom drawer. One corner of your desk. Your nightstand.

Set a timer for 10 minutes and clear it.

Completing one small, manageable task gives your brain a sense of progress and reward. More importantly, it creates evidence:

I can change something. I can move forward.

Sometimes changing what is around us helps change what is happening within us.

Clear the Clutter in Three Ways

If the clutter is physical, clear one small space.

If the clutter is mental, move your body. Walk, stretch, exercise, or dance in your kitchen. Get out of your head and back into your body.

PHYSICAL

Clear it.

One small space.

MENTAL

Move it.

Get into your body.

EMOTIONAL

Process it.

Give it somewhere to go

If the clutter is emotional, give the emotion somewhere to go. Name it. Journal it. Talk about it. Pray about it. Cry. Breathe. Tap. Allow yourself to process what you're carrying instead of immediately trying to escape it.

You don't have to solve your entire life today.

You just need to create a little space.

The Power of the Pause

The next time you feel overwhelmed and notice yourself reaching for quick relief, pause before going on autopilot.

Ask yourself:

Will what I'm about to do help me or hinder me?

Then ask:

What do I really need right now?

Listen for the answer.

Clarity doesn't always come from thinking harder.

Sometimes clarity comes from clearing space: around you, within you, and inside your mind.

So don't worry about getting all the way to Z today.

Clear one drawer.

Take one walk.

Process one emotion.

Make one intentional choice.

Then see what feels possible from there.

Less escape. More clarity. More joy.

Less escape. More clarity. More joy.
